After studying Environmental Geography at the University of London, I wasn’t sure what career path to take. My first job was working for an IT training company, dealing with the logistics around providing courses across the country. After this I worked in the lobbying arm of a PR agency. This sparked my interest in all things Parliamentary.
I joined the House of Commons Library as a member of the front of house team. This involved dealing with enquiries from MPs and their staff. It gave me a really good grounding in how Parliament works and was a brilliant way to get to know the people who make our laws. I then moved into the world of Information Management and managed the Library’s online resources. This was an interesting blend of contract management, supplier relationship management and user experience work.
Since then, I’ve managed the Library’s larger scale resources procurements, developed professional project management skills, and managed a major change programme. I’m now leading a programme of wide-ranging projects to deliver a new vision and strategy for our Library Services team.
Parliament is a very large and varied organisation which can be challenging to work in. This is also a strength because of the opportunity to explore many different career paths in the same place of work. The support and training available helps me make the most of this.
