This dashboard has 2021 census data for England and Wales showing the country of birth of the population, by constituency. It reflects the population on 21 March 2021.

These figures are from Office for National Statistics (ONS) analysis of 2021 census data. To date, the ONS has only published constituency data for broad groups of countries rather than individual countries. More detailed country of birth data is available for local authorities and regions on the ONS website.

83% of usual residents of England and Wales in March 2021 were people born in the UK. 6% were born in EU countries, and 11% were born elsewhere in the world.

Definitions

Country of birth is different from nationality or residence.

In the census questionnaire, people were asked which country they were born in. Those who were not born in the UK were then asked to write in the current name of their country of birth.

The ONS has aggregated this data to give figures for wider country groupings. The table below explains the country of birth groupings used in this dashboard:

As of February 2023, the ONS has only released country of birth data for constituencies using broad country groups, rather than for smaller regions or individual countries.

This means the data we have calculated for constituencies is limited to the same country groups. More detailed country of birth data is available for local authorities and regions on the ONS website.

Data updates

This dashboard uses 2021 census data. The 2021 census is currently the only source of constituency-level data on this topic, which means that there aren’t any major updates planned for the near future. However, we will update once more detailed country groupings are published by the ONS.
