Notes

Different ethnic classifications were used in the Censuses in each of these parts of the UK. This table combines these different detailed classifications into a higher-level summary.

‘Ethnic groups from different ethnic classifications used in England and Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland have been combined in the following way:

England and Wales

  • White is the figure for Total White
  • Mixed is the figure for Total Mixed/multiple ethnic groups
  • Asian is the figure for Total Asian/Asian British
  • Black is the figure for Total Black/African/Caribbean/Black British
  • Other is the figure for Total Other ethnic group

Scotland

  • White is the figure for Total White
  • Mixed is the figure for Total Mixed or multiple ethnic groups
  • Asian is the figure for Total Asian, Asian Scottish or Asian British
  • Black is the combined figure for Total African and Total Caribbean or Black
  • Other is the figure for Total Other ethnic groups

Northern Ireland

  • White is the combined figure for White and Irish Traveller
  • Mixed is the figure for Mixed
  • Asian is the combined figure for Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Chinese, and Other Asian
  • Black is the combined figure for Black Caribbean, Black African, and Black other
  • Other is the figure for Other

Ethnicity in the Census is self defined. People belong to whichever group the identify in response to the question: “what is your ethnic group?”
