The number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance or claiming Universal Credit and required to seek work was 771,000 in August 2016, up 2,400 from July.
The unemployment rate was 4.9% in May-July 2016. The ILO measure of unemployment was 1.63 million people, 39,000 fewer than the previous quarter and 190,000 fewer than the year before.
The number of people in employment was 31.77 million in May-July 2016, up 174,000 from the previous quarter and 559,000 more than the year before. The employment rate was 74.5%, the highest since comparable records began in 1971.
Average weekly total pay in Great Britain increased by 2.3% in the three months to July 2016 compared with the previous year. Regular pay (excluding bonuses) grew by 2.1%. CPI inflation averaged 0.4% over this period.
