In the referendum on 23 June 2016, a majority of the UK electorate voted to leave the EU. On 26 January 2017 the European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Bill 2016-17 was introduced in the House of Commons by the Rt Hon David Davis MP, Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, and on 16 March it received Royal Assent. On 2 February Mr Davis published The United Kingdom’s exit from and new partnership with the European Union White Paper. On 29 March Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union was triggered in a letter from the Prime Minister, Rt Hon Theresa May MP to European Council President Donald Tusk as part of the government’s Plan for Britain. On 12 July 2018 the Government published its White Paper, The future relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union. On 25 November 2018 the Government published the Withdrawal Agreement and Political Declaration.
