A Westminster Hall debate on the subject of independent advocates for trafficked children has been scheduled for 1430hrs on Tuesday 28 June 2016. The member in charge of this debate is Ms Fiona Mactaggart.

Section 48 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 (MSA) provides that the Secretary of State should make arrangements to enable independent child trafficking advocates to represent and support children who there are reasonable grounds for believing may be the victims of human trafficking. The section is not yet in force, with the exception of subsection (7), which requires the Secretary of State to publish a report to Parliament on the steps she proposes to take in relation to the introduction of independent advocates.

The bill would prevent sentencing guidelines from referring to personal characteristics such as race, religion or belief, and cultural background in their guidance regarding when a pre-sentence report should be requested.
