• The purpose of this debate is to discuss financial support available to apprentices, after an unsuccessful amendment to the Technical and Further Education Bill 2016-17 in the House of Lords Committee stage debate on 27 February 2017.
• The amendment, tabled by Lord Watson of Invergowie, would have enabled eligible families to receive child benefit for children aged under 20 who are undertaking apprenticeships.

Average loan debt and the overall scale of loans have increased over time as the Government has shifted funding for maintenance and teaching to loans. This has led to concerns about the burden of debt, high interest rates and the cost of loans to the taxpayer.
