E-petition 700024 to “ban fossil fuel advertising and sponsorship” will be debated in Westminster Hall on 7 July 2025. The subject for this debate was determined by the Petitions Committee, and the debate will be opened by Jacob Collier MP.
The petition calls for a ban of advertising on fossil fuel, likening this to the ban on tobacco advertising that was introduced in 2003. It also asserts that fossil fuel advertising has a history of ‘greenwashing’ and that fossil fuel companies have spent over £4 billion on sports sponsorship deals.
The government responded to this petition, setting out that “the government is committed to reducing emissions from high carbon products and will continue to bring forward proposals to do so”, but that “there are currently no plans to restrict fossil fuel advertising”.
Further information on fossil fuel companies, advertising standards and regulation, is set out in the attached debate pack.
