The latest data show:
• The number of people aged 18 or over claiming Jobseekers Allowance increased by 19,600 in May 2011 to 1.49 million people.
• The wider ILO measure of unemployment was 2.43 million in February-April 2011, a fall of 88,000 from the last quarter – this was the largest quarterly fall in unemployment since 2000.
• In March 2011, the number of people in employment in the private sector increased by 104,000 on the previous quarter to 23.08 million. This was an increase of 520,000 on the previous year. The number of people employed in the public sector in March 2011 was 6.16 million, down 24,000 on the previous quarter and 143,000 on the previous year.
