The latest data show:
The number of people claiming Jobseekers Allowance increased by 3,000 between October and November 2011 to 1.60 million people aged 18 or over. The wider ILO measure of unemployment was 2.64 million in the period August-October 2011, a rise of 128,000 from the last quarter. The number of unemployed people is the highest since 1994. In August-October 2011, 1.03 million people aged 16-24 were unemployed, an increase of 54,000 on the previous quarter, and the highest since the ONS’s current series began in 1992. Employment in the public sector is down by 67,000 over the previous quarter, to 5.99 million in September 2011. Employment in the private sector was up by 5,000 over the previous quarter, to 23.12 million.
