The number of people claiming JSA increased by 8,100 between April and May 2012 to 1.60 million people aged 18 or over. The wider ILO measure of unemployment was 2.61 million in the period February-April 2012, a decrease of 51,000 from the last quarter. The number of people in employment increased by 166,000 over the last quarter, to 29.28 million in February-April 2012. Employment in the public sector in March 2012 was 5.90 million, down 39,000 on the previous quarter – it is now at its lowest level since March 2003. Employment in the private sector was 23.38 million, up 205,000 on the previous quarter.
