The number of people claiming JSA decreased by 5,900 between June and July 2012 to 1.59 million people aged 18 or over. The wider ILO measure of unemployment was 2.56 million in the period April-June 2012, a decrease of 46,000 from the last quarter. The unemployment rate was 8.0%. The number of people in employment increased by 201,000 over the last quarter, to 29.48 million in April-June 2012, the highest it’s been in nearly four years. The proportion of people aged 16-64 who were economically inactive (not in work or looking for work) fell to 22.6% in the last quarter, its lowest level since 1991.
