The number of people claiming JSA decreased by 15,000 between July and August 2012 to 1.57 million people aged 18 or over. The wider ILO measure of unemployment was 2.59 million in the period May-July 2012, a decrease of 7,000 from the last quarter. The unemployment rate was 8.1%. The number of people in employment increased by 236,000 over the last quarter, to 29.56 million in May-July 2012, the highest it’s been in over four years. The number of economically inactive people aged 16-64 was 9.01 million in May-July 2012, down 181,000 on the quarter, the biggest quarterly fall since the series began in 1971.
