The number of people claiming JSA increased by 10,100 between September and October 2012 to 1.58 million people aged 18 or over.
The wider ILO measure of unemployment was 2.51 million in the period July to September 2012, a decrease of 49,000 from the last quarter. The unemployment rate was 7.8%. The number of people in employment increased by 100,000 over the last quarter, to 29.58 million in July to September 2012. The employment rate (the proportion of the population in work, taking population change into account) was 71.2%, an increase of 0.2% points on the previous quarter. The number of economically inactive people aged 16-64 was 9.07 million in July to September 2012, down 25,000 compared to the last quarter. October 2012 is the last month for which the current statistical series on Jobcentre Plus vacancies (shown in Table 2) will be published. DWP is introducing a new job search service from 19 November 2012. Statistics will be published on the new service but not on a consistent basis with the current series.
