The number of people claiming JSA decreased by 3,000 between October and November 2012 to 1.58 million people aged 18 or over. The wider ILO measure of unemployment was 2.51 million in the period August to October 2012, a decrease of 82,000 from the last quarter (the largest quarterly fall since 2001). The unemployment rate was 7.8%. The number of people in employment increased by 40,000 over the last quarter, to 29.60 million in August to October 2012, an all-time high. The employment rate (the proportion of the population in work, taking population change into account) was 71.2%, unchanged from the previous quarter. The number of economically inactive people aged 16-64 was 9.07 million in August to October 2012, up 60,000 compared to the last quarter.
