This note provides information on the development of the Office of the Children’s Commissioner for England since its establishment in 2005.

England was the last country in the UK to establish a Children’s Commissioner, and for completeness the note includes information on the establishment of commissioners in Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. The introduction of the Children’s Commissioner for England is discussed, as well as the Dunford Review of the role in 2010. The review prompted the Government to strengthen the Commissioner’s role in the Children and Families Act 2014.
