Joyce Banda became Malawi's president in turbulent circumstances in April 2012 and since then has sought to build domestic support and win back previously alienated Western donors through an economic and political reform programme. In 2024, the government announced it would repeal and replace the Northern Ireland (Legacy and Reconciliation) Act 2023. Petition 725716 calls on the government to protect veterans from prosecution and not make changes to the legislation has received over 165,000 signatures and will be the subject of a debate in Westminster Hall on 14 July 2025.
States have pledged reforms to scale up funding to meet the sustainable development goals. But aid from major donors fell in 2024 and more falls are expected.
