Civil servants’ and MPs’ salaries

Historically MPs’ pay was linked to the salary scales of certain civil service grades. Although this is no longer the case, there is a continued interest in how these rates of pay have moved relative to each other.

This note details basic pay rates among senior civil servants and Members of Parliament. Section A charts salary changes among MPs and members of the Senior Civil Service (SCS) since 1985. Section B compares salary scales for Grade 6 and Grade 7 civil servants across government departments.
