Overview

The NHS was founded in 1948, after Parliament passed the National Health Service Act in 1946

Over the years, the NHS has evolved in response to the needs of successive generations, including delivering Europe’s first liver transplant in 1968, the world’s first CT scan on a patient in 1971, and more recently the world’s first rapid whole genome sequencing service for seriously ill babies and children.
