Notes

Businesses

Industries are based on Standard Industrial Classification (UK SIC 2007) broad industrial classifications

Business data was published by the Office for National Statistics and based on statistics taken from the Inter Departmental Business Register.

These figures only include businesses which are registered for VAT and/or PAYE. This means many small single-person businesses will be excluded.

Businesses are only counted once, at their head office location. Figures are rounded to avoid disclosure; this means that zeroes may not necessarily be true zeroes.

Employees

Employee data was published by the Office for National Statistics and based on estimates from the Business Register and Employment Survey (BRES), which is a national survey of employers.

Employment figures are for people who work in the constituency, rather than those who live in the constituency.

Figures count jobs rather than people, as one person can have more than one job.

Industries are based on Standard Industrial Classification (UK SIC 2007) broad industrial classifications. Agriculture has been omitted because BRES data excludes farm agriculture statistics at a local level (but includes some agricultural service activities, hunting, trapping, forestry and fishing).

BRES data is taken from a survey, and hence figures should be treated as estimates. Figures are rounded to avoid disclosure; this means that zeroes may not necessarily be true zeroes.

Data for Northern Ireland was taken from the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency’s most recent BRES publication. Northern Ireland statistics are for September 2022, and are based on previous (pre-2024 general election) constituency boundaries.
